Chicago’s largest CRE forecast event set for Jan. 18

The Annual Commercial Real Estate Forecast Conference produced by the Illinois Real Estate Journal returns to the Marriott Chicago for its ninth annual gathering on Jan. 18. The conference remains the longest-running and largest commercial real estate forecast in Chicago.

Chicago to Revisit Departmental Consolidation

In an effort to cut costs, the city of Chicago will again experiment with department mergers next year. Mayor Richard M. Daley today appointed Andrew J. Mooney as interim head of the new Department of Housing and Economic Development. As of January 1, 2011, the new department will consolidate the Department of Community Development and the Department of Zoning and Land Use.

Geothermal Energy: Operating 24 Hours a Day

Drugstore giant Walgreens announced yesterday the opening of the nation’s first pharmacy chain location to make use of geothermal energy for facility heating and cooling. The store in suburban Oak Park is expected to reduce its energy usage by about 46 percent as a result of the geothermal system.

Chicago’s Aqua Makes Cut of Elite International Skyscrapers

The internationally-acclaimed mixed-use Aqua tower (previously) that anchors Chicago’s rising Lakeshore East neighborhood has been selected one of five finalists for an International Highrise Award. It is the only U.S. representative. The Aqua tower, designed by Studio Gang Architects for developer Magellan Development Group was, selected by an international jury of architects, engineers and property specialists by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, Germany. The residential highrise was also recently honored as Skyscraper of the Year by Emporis, the international building database.

Comprehensive Plan for Chicago Region Put Into Motion

Last year, Daniel Burnham was as celebrated here in Chicago as at anytime during his life in recognition of the Plan of Chicago’s centennial. The 1909 Plan supplied Chicago with Navy Pier, Grant Park and Northerly Island, among other public amenities. Today, leaders from across metropolitan Chicago’s seven counties voted unanimously to adopt a new plan, GO TO 2040, designed to guide development and investment decisions through mid-century and beyond.

USGBC Names Award in Mayor Daley’s Honor

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) yesterday announced a new award titled the “Mayor Richard M. Daley Legacy Award for Global Leadership in Creating Sustainable Cities.” The inaugural award will be presented to its namesake at the USGBC Greenbuild conference to be held November 17-19, 2010 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Chicago Building Inspector Convicted of Bribery

A former Chicago building inspector was convicted today in federal court on two counts of soliciting or accepting bribes to look the other way on building code violations.
Witnesses said that Jose Hernandez would inform them of violations, then supply the number of a private expediter who, for a fee, would take care of the violations. Work would subsequently stop on the projects of those who opted not to pay, resulting in long delays for the victims in obtaining permits and approvals to resume construction.

Carpenters Union to Picket McCormick Place

Beginning on Saturday, Sep. 18, 2010, the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters will initiate picketing activities at McCormick Place facilities in an effort to organize the employees of exhibitors who are performing the assembly and dismantling of exhibits at the trade show venues.

Case Law: Statute of Limitations Upholds Annexation

The trial court correctly held that a property owner was barred by a one-year statute of limitations from challenging the annexation of its property into the Village of Glendale Heights. The Illinois Appellate Court, 2nd District, has affirmed a ruling by DuPage County Circuit Judge Bonnie M. Wheaton.
Ayre Enterprises, Inc. was the owner of a parcel of real estate that had been annexed into the village by an October 2000 ordinance. The village alleged that Glen Ayre violated the village’s zoning ordinances and therefore sought injunctions restricting the use of the land.

Greenbuild Legacy Projects Announced

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC)-Illinois Chapter Host Committee awarded six grants to Chicago area “legacy projects” in conjunction with this November’s Greenbuild Conference. This action advances the Chapter’s goal of developing green building at the grassroots level. The Greenbuild Conference is looking to give ten full conference scholarships to Greenbuild 2010 for those making a difference locally, as a way to encourage diversity within the green building community.
