USGBC Names Award in Mayor Daley’s Honor

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) yesterday announced a new award titled the “Mayor Richard M. Daley Legacy Award for Global Leadership in Creating Sustainable Cities.” The inaugural award will be presented to its namesake at the USGBC Greenbuild conference to be held November 17-19, 2010 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Greenbuild Legacy Projects Announced

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC)-Illinois Chapter Host Committee awarded six grants to Chicago area “legacy projects” in conjunction with this November’s Greenbuild Conference. This action advances the Chapter’s goal of developing green building at the grassroots level. The Greenbuild Conference is looking to give ten full conference scholarships to Greenbuild 2010 for those making a difference locally, as a way to encourage diversity within the green building community.

Mandating Change in Illinois

The State of Illinois wants to demand more green from its buildings. The Illinois General Assembly recently passed the Green Buildings Act into legislation. The Act, effective as of July 24, 2009, mandates that state-funded building construction and major building renovation of state-owned facilities must obtain LEED, Green Globe or an equivalent sustainable building certification.
